Converting from agent to probe monitoring

Some devices running Windows operating systems may no longer support agent installation or may be unable to communicate by using the configured Network Security profile. If you need to continue monitoring these devices, you must convert them from agent‑based monitoring to probe‑based monitoring.

Probe‑based monitoring is limited to SNMP, WMI, and TCP, which reduces the available capabilities compared to agent‑based monitoring. As a result, some services cannot be monitored by probes and must be removed.

Check whether a service can be monitored by a probe

  1. Select a device, and then go to Device DetailsMonitoring

  2. Choose the service name.

  3. Under the Service Details tab, open the Monitored By list.

  4. Review the available options.

If no probe appears in the list, the service cannot be monitored by a probe.

To convert a device to probe monitoring, a probe must be installed in the environment. Agent‑dependent integrations, such as DNS Filtering and Intune, are not available after conversion to probe monitoring.

See Locate legacy agent software to identify any outdated agent software.

Convert services from agent to probe‑based monitoring

You can follow the steps below to convert supported services, or remove any services that cannot be converted.

  1. Select a device, and then go to Device Details > Settings > Local Agent.
  2. Clear the Install Local Agent checkbox.
  3. Select Monitoring, and under the Probe/Agent column, identify the services currently monitored by Local Agent.
  4. Choose the service name to open Service Details.
  5. Open the Monitored By list.
  6. Select a probe from the list.

Removing the Local Agent also removes any monitoring services that cannot be transferred to a monitoring appliance.
